Acne – How can Rosehip Oil help?

What is acne?

Acne is a disease of the sebaceous hair follicle that afflicts most people during teenage years. There are several different types of acne including blackheads, white heads (comedones), pimples (papules), pustules and cysts.

What causes acne?

Acne is directly related to the production of hormones within the body that cause the over-stimulation of the sebaceous glands. Under normal circumstances, sebum travels up the hair follicle and onto the surface of the skin. With acne, sebum becomes trapped with the hair follicle along with dead skin cells, becoming a breeding ground for bacteria. Chemicals produced by the bacteria cause inflammation of the follicle and the surrounding skin. Acne is a vicious circle – picking and squeezing can spread infection and cause severe scarring.

How can Rosehip Oil help?

It can be tempting for acne sufferers to scrub the skin several times a day to remove excess oil; however, this can actually intensify the problem. Our skin is designed to compensate for the removal of the oil by producing more and more, resulting in recurring infection and more acne.

The best solution is to cleanse gently, without stripping the skin, and to maintain the skin’s balance. After cleansing, Kosmea’s Certified Organic Rose Hip Oil can be applied to damp skin both morning and night.

Why add oil to oily skin?

The essential fatty acids combined with the anti-inflammatory properties of rose hip oil will help to prevent infection and reduce over-stimulation of the sebaceous glands. Over time, Kosmea’s Certified Organic Rose Hip Oil helps to repair the damaged skin and prevent acne scarring.

Superfoods for Healthy Skin

Our diet has a big impact on the appearance of our skin and overall body health. Incorporating superfoods into our meals can be valuable for maintaining healthy looking skin from the inside out, and creating a healthy lifestyle long term.

Superfoods are foods packed full of healthy vitamins and nutrients. Here are some top superfoods the Kosmea team loves.

Avocado’s contain a good source of biotin and omega-9’s to help prevent dry skin and brittle hair and nails. Avocado is great on toast, added to a salad or in sushi.

Blueberries are full of antioxidants which can help slow down the effects of ageing. Have blueberries as a mid-morning snack, or add them to porridge, or yoghurt for breakfast.

A rich source of Omega-3s and Vitamin E, walnuts will put a shine in your hair and a glow in your skin. Eating a handful as a snack or adding to a dessert is a yummy way of adding them to your food.

Apples contain free radical fighting antioxidants and Vitamin C which help to speed up the skins cell production and fight skin ageing. Snack on an apple when hungry, or add it to a healthy juice.

This superfood contains Omega-3 fatty acids and astaxanthin – a carotenoid that improves skin elasticity, so you’ll have fewer fine lines. Try grilling, or baking wild salmon with a side of asparagus, or adding it to a salad or risotto.

Most green vegetables are fantastic for your health, spinach is packed full of multiple vitamins, magnesium, potassium, calcium, iron and those all-important omega-3 fatty acids. Add spinach to your sandwich for lunch, or have it sautéed with eggs for a filling breakfast.

Garlic has great antibacterial properties and promotes a boost in immunity. A healthy body means healthy skin, add garlic to recipes such as stir-fry, salad dressings, chicken dishes, and when roasting vegetables.

Green Tea

Green Tea contains antioxidants and polyphenols which can assist with anti-ageing and help eliminate free radicals. The team at Kosmea are big fans of green tea and are always sipping on a cup at their desk!

Tomatoes are helpful in assisting anti-ageing as they contain the antioxidant lycopene. Try a tomato soup for the winter, or a tomato based pasta sauce.

Sweet Potatoes

Sweet Potatoes can be added to your meals as a mashed side dish, roasted with herbs, or baked as fries. They are full of beta-carotene another anti-oxidant that joins the fight against anti-ageing.

Double Cleansing – Why you should be doing it

At Kosmea we always recommend double cleansing at night to our customers. Double cleansing is the act of cleansing twice in a row. This action is an important step in all night time skincare routines particularly if you wear makeup.

Throughout the day your skin is exposed to all different environmental elements such as air pollution, dirt, and oils from the hands touching the face. If you are wondering why your skin isn’t at its best it may be down to this one simple, but crucial step in your skincare regime.

The first cleanse is required to remove any makeup, SPF, sweat and dirt from the skin on the face and neck. The second cleanse is to give skin a deeper down clean and make sure all traces of anything you were wearing on the face are removed. The second cleanse helps the products you use after cleansing to work more effectively as they are not having to work through other products remaining on the surface of the skin.

Double cleansing is a very important step that is sometimes skipped by many people who then go onto rub grime and dirt, around the face when applying, an oil, serum, or moisturiser which can result in breakouts and unhappy skin.

“The first cleanse is cleaning product from the skin, whereas the second cleanse is cleaning the skin itself.”

We recommend cleansing with either our Purifying Cream Cleanser, or Clarifying Facial Wash twice and removing the product from your skin with our Five-Minute Facial Muslin Cloth. This will prepare skin for application of our Certified Organic Rosehip Oil so that your skin can repair overnight.

If you don’t already double cleanse, now is the time to start and your skin will love you for it!
